The Ballad of Big Al

Well another 2 fantastic weeks are complete in Year 2; we have been up to some exciting dinosaur activities. The children have been focussing on non-fiction facts to immerse the children in as much information as possible; they are now experts on at least 4 different dinosaurs.

We started off by learning about Al and his life as a carnivorous Allosaurus, all the children watched clips from BBC’s walking with Dinosaurs and shared ideas and information from non-fiction books! We learnt how Al hatched out from an egg and created some life size Allosaurus eggs of our own! We are all very positive that using our super powered imaginations that they will begin to hatch soon!

Following this our junior palaeontologists became experts on a selection of dinosaurs, each taught by a different adult.

We had Miss Byles and the aerial agile Pterodactyls!
We had Miss Potts with team Spinosaurus, terrifying and gigantic!

Mrs Sturmey had the walnut brained Stegosaurus!

And finally Mr Hustler hunted in packs with the deadly Utahraptors. (bigger Velociraptors)

All the children have created some amazing factual pages on these dinosaurs, we spend 2 lessons on each dinosaur with the adult. The first we share facts, draw pictures and role play how they would have lived. We also teach how to explore non-fiction books using the contents, index and glossary’s to assist our searches. The second lesson involves the children independently writing and creating their factual page to go in their own Encyclopaedia Dinosaura.

The children have explored a variety a variety of crafting and making media, including papier-mache and plaster of Paris. The children have greatly enjoyed using these mucky activities and creating wonderful dinosaur and fossils! They are fantastic.

That’s it for this week!
