Hello and welcome to the Pennington Infant School Year 2 blog. We have had a fantastic start to our new topic "The Minpins" - based on the Timeless classic by Roald Dahl. The children have now finished listening to the colourful story following Little Billy and his adventure into the Forest of Sin.
In our literacy times we have spent sessions reading parts of story and working accordingly. We have been focussing on "Painting a picture with my words" similarly to the Titanic work we have done, spending time building our vocabulary and extending sentences to make them more interesting.
The story is very emotional and as such we have been using our emotions in our writing, recounting Little Billy's emotional roller coaster through the story. He is chased the evil, stone suckering, tooth-plucking, fire-breathing Spittler/Gruncher! However the book never depicts the monster we are able to build up a picture from the words.
The children have however, putting pencil to paper to draw and label what they believe the dreaded monster to look like, we labelled these using wow words before using them in our writing. Our art focus for these2 weeks has been to create a clay model of this monster, complete with all his nasty accessories that the children wanted to use e.g. Giant wings, chains around his neck, spikes down his spine.
In Mathematics we have been focussing on helping Little Billy and his Minpin friends by counting to 20/30 forwards and backwards with Mrs Gosney. With myself we have focused on doubling 2 digit numbers by partitioning, doubling then recombining in order to work out how to trap the horrific Spittler.
I will add pictures shortly.
Next weeks update will recount what we have done in week 3, and will demonstrate how we are raising the standards of handwriting in Year 2.
Thanks for reading,
Mr Hustler and the Year 2 Team.
