Handwriting:
In Year 2 we have a clear outline for our expectations of handwriting. "Children's handwriting will become fluently joined up in the cursive style with clear ascenders and descenders."
In order to get the children's writing to the high standard that we expect we have put in a large amounts of time and effort in handwriting, literacy times and guided writing.
We begin everyday with phonics, in this time the children write in phonics books or on whiteboards, we focus on the rules for spelling words, using our sounds in words and putting the words in context. (Our philosephy being words are useless when not put into context!) - Mrs Gosney c1970
After our phonics 20minute session we have our literacy hour which builds upon skills through our topic as you will have read in previous blogs. After lunch we have a designated handwriting 20minute session, the children really enjoy the novelty of handwriting time. The classroom is layed out differently, as the pictures will show. The children set this out so we are all able to see the screen and we start by building the fine motor skills through large movements before writing on our whiteboards or in the set activity that we have.
This expectation is then carried through in all the writing the children do, they will always be excepted to join the letters clearly to show the clear breaks in the words and to raise the presentation standard.
P.S. Photo's taken on Red Nose Day, we normally wear school uniform!
On to Week 3:
This week we have learnt all about the Great Fire of London. We explored some sentences using our reading skills to decide wether they are fact or fiction. Next we used our ICT skills to explore 2 on-line interactive activities to decode information writing this down on whiteboard. Here are links to the games so you are able to access them from home: H:\LearnersPool\Yr 2\Game the Great Fire of London, 1666 Great Fire Quiz Great Fire of London Game.
In the afternoons the children used enquiry skills through science to explore how sound works. We made talking telephones to explore wether the people from London in 1666 could have used these to warn each other of the impending fire. We have been making farewell cards for Mr Chapman and Mrs O'Grady.
That's all folks,
Check back next week for another update! Thanks,
Mr. Hustler and the Year 2 Team.
