The last 2 weeks have been fantastic!
We have learnt all about the the tragedy of the Titanic. The children spent time focussing on factual writing recounting the events of the sinking. We found out information using the research skills they have learnt. We used both laptops to search through a interactive Power Point and Non-Fiction books to find all our information. We wrote the information on whiteboards before the adults checked what we had written and helped us to correct our work. Then we wrote it up in best.
Following this we have also written some brilliant first hand accounts from 1st or 3rd class passengers. We spent lots of time role-playing to build up our language. We then started with simple sentences. We focussed on our pencil targets to make our writing more interesting, focusing on using a variety of sentence starters to make our writing interesting.
Credit to Mrs G for helping all of us, including Mr Hustler to make our writing more interesting! We started by writing a sentence on the board:
"I saw a red flag at the back of the boat."
The children then helped us build it up, word banking interesting words and adding more description. We started tearing and sharing ideas to build up our vocabulary.
Below are the children's finished peices of writing. You can see how we started!
From here we built up a word bank of positive and negative words to describe the situation on the Titanic and how it changed as the events of the 15th April 1912 unfolded.
We also wrote poems using these words banks and increased our first hand accounts.
Finally we have been discussing how our BLAST FROM THE PAST! Museaum is going to look and have been building exhibitions independently or using our team social skills work collaboratively to create some fantastic peices. Our Museaum opens for 1 day only on FRIDAY 15th FEBRUARY from 8:45-9:15
See you soon!
Mr Hustler and the Year 2 Team!
