Hello and thank you for visiting the Pennington Infant School Year 2 blog.
We have been having a fantastic time in Year 2 since coming back after christmas.
Our new topic started off when Mrs Gosney, Miss Snaddon and I discovered an an old dusty box at the back of a charity shop. Upon opening it with the children we uncovered lots of old cold weather gear including 2 pairs of gloves, boots, hat and snow googles. We also found a very old diary entry dated April 1911 from Scott.
Ollie had this to say: "Mr Hustler went on the internet and found out that the box was from Captain Scott there was a shoo in the box. Mrs G put her hand in the shoo and felt something goowy but it was Scots diary. Mr hustler put al the clothes on."
We discoverd Captain Scott was a famous explorer and we learnt valuable research skills, using powerpoints, the internet and non-fiction books. We learnt how to take notes by writing our ideas from the information down on whiteboards before photocopying it and then writing it up in best.
Week 2:
Week 2 visiting the Junior School to watch a pantomime on Peter Pan. We all had a great time and laughed alot! The next day we had an amazing art activity day were we split into groups and went to different classes to make big peices of art work. In Year 2 we learnt all about J.M Barrie.
Luke had this to say: "J.M.Barries dad was a weaker. J.M. Barrie rote peter pan. he left Peter Pan to grate Ormon Streete Hospital." - Taken with Luke's Spellings for words.
We named our topic Blast from the Past as we are learning all about famous people who lived in the past.
Week 3:
Wow after a snow day on Friday we started our week with our Science experiement. We explored how much water was in 1 litre of snow. We discussed different ways of exploring it and how we could find out.
In small groups we collected lots of snow, different groups did different things such as patting down the snow. Daisy explains here what we did " We collected the buteful white snow because when you bring it in side the warm the snow melts into water. I think there will be less water than snow when it melts.
1 litre of Snow melted into 240ml of water. We all ended up with different amounts of water because some people pushed the air out by pressing down the snow, some people didn't press down." Taken from Daisy's Topic book.
We have been learning all about this Titanic this week, we discovered that it was a huge ship that sank the same year as Captain Scott died on his exploration of the Antarctic. We have been working in pairs to research the Titanic and have made mind maps of everything that we know about it. Again using the whiteboards to find information before having it photocopied.
The Crew were famas offersors of the Titanic. The 9 men were in charch of the titanic when it crashed into an ice burg. The titanic set sail from Southampton. Captain Smith's titanic sank when it hit a giant iceburg in the Atlantic Ocean. It was 22 busses long.
All of the Team and I are very proud of all the hard work the Year 2 children are doing at the moment. Our calm classrooms are always buzzing with enthusiastic children eager to learn.
Our End product for our Topic is to great a mesueam in Year 2. The Children will spend the final week of our term researching their own famous person, dressing up like them on the Thursday and making an information pack with artefacts.
That's it for another week.
Speak soon!
Kind Regards,
Mr Hustler and the Year 2 Team.
